A head full of hair is an ideal for men, and many are disappointed when their hair starts thinning and fall out. Few are blessed with hair resistant to balding, while most notice balding in their mid forties. However in our clinic we do see many young men in their early twenties who have lost their hair even before marriage.
When detected early baldness can be delayed to a great extent with multiple new therapies such as stem cell therapy, Platelet rich plasma, minoxidil and oral medications. However most of the time people regret what is already lost. To them hair transplantation is an effective remedy for their baldness.
1. What are the causes of baldness?
In most of the cases baldness is genetic. It can be inherited either from father or mother side and can skip a generation. Other causes can be poor nutrition, stress, hormonal imbalances, scarring and other scalp diseases.
2.Can baldness be prevented?
Yes. If detected early, medications can preserve the hair and prevent baldness.
3. What is treatment for baldness?
Hair Transplant Surgery is an effective treatment for baldness where growing hair is transplanted from one area of the body to another. Great technological advancements, research and instrumentation have allowed individual follicles to be transplanted.
4. Will there be a scar?
Previous methods of transplantation involved cutting a strip of hair from the back of the head and cutting out of individual follicles before implantation. This technique is called as follicular unit transplantation(FUT), and resulted in a scar in the back of the head. In the latest method we employ called Follicular unit extraction the same is not required as the follicles are individually extracted.
5. Will the transplanted hair fall off?
You may have noticed that most guys get balled in the front and top of the head and the last to fall out are the hairs in the back of the head. This is because the hair in the back of the head are naturally resistant to baldness. When the same are transplanted to the bald areas they retain this resistance to baldness and thus last a very long time.
6. Can it be used for thinning hair?
Yes. Transplantation can be done within areas of thinning hair to restore the hair density. Medicines will be prescribed to make even the existing thinning hair recover their density so that maximal density of hair can be achieved.
7. How do you prevent existing hair from falling?
By using PRP therapy, and stem cell stimulating factors. along with oral medication and lotions.
8. What is the procedure like?
It takes about 6 – 8hours time, and is done in our operation theater, under local anesthesia, to numb areas being treated, under strict aseptic precautions. You will be required to change positions few times to access different areas of the scalp. No admission is required. Dressing done is minimal. Snacks tea and coffee are served intermittently. You can drive back home.
6. Is it painful ?
The entire surgery is done under local anaesthesia. No pain will be felt through out the procedure. Medicines given for pain and swelling will take care of any discomfort after the procedure.
7. What about privacy?
We respect the privacy of all our patients. We do not post any pictures of you on our site, even with eyes covered etc, unless you expressly allow us to do in writing.
11.Any extra care to be taken for the transplanted hair?
In the immediate aftermath you will have to treat the scalp delicately to prevent the grafts from being pulled out. however one healing is complete, you can treat your hair just as you do now. You are however encouraged to maintain the hair properly as we will advise.
12. Would there be any side effects ?
No side effects are known from this surgery. Minimal swelling may be seen which will subside with medicines. No long term complications.
13. Does baldness occur in women? What is the treatment ?
Baldness can occur in women. While there is a genetic component, many ladies have other medical problems resulting in hair fall. So we encourage medical investigations and treatment in women. However if necessary hair transplantation can be done as a last resort.
15. What are the other areas where hair can be harvested ?
Hair can be technically harvested and transplanted anywhere on the body.
